Book IV American Slavery, American Freedom

Hi,

In book four of American Slavery, American Freedom by Edmund Morgan the phrases toward slavery, toward racism, toward populism, and toward the republic are all chapter titles used in book four.  A question to the author of this book is did not slavery, racism, populism, and republican ideals already exist in the minds of Virginians before this historical time period? "Catering to the passions and prejudices of the louts." is a quote used by Morgan to help catch the interest of the reader, but this quote does not answer my particular historical question.  This may be a weakness in the closing chapters of American Slavery, American Freedom.

Thank you

  1. I was thinking if similar sentiments while reading these chapters. It is almost as if he contradicts everything Morgan said of Virginians by claiming this consciousness came only after the Revolution.
