Updated Figures from Prologue

In case anyone else was curious about what some of the updated figures from the Prologue would be:

  • contrary to Davis' 2010 statistical prediction, Anglos are still the majority in the state of California according to the 2010 census: 58% white v. 38% latino
  • census data for L.A.: 50% white v. 49% latino
  • affluence - $87,000 and above
  • poverty - $26,000 and under
The census data is actually a little confusing since it doesn't total 100%.  If anyone understands why, please tell me -- numbers aren't my thing (surprise).

  1. Thanks for the post Samantha. I often wonder about predictions when I read the, but am usually too lazy or busy to check them on my own. While it definitely adds to the authors argument at the time it is a risky move. None of those people are riding floating skateboards either no mater what race or economic status.

  2. Another question should be the definitions within the census. According to the census Hispanics have no race. So when filling out a census Hispanics are often confused on what to actually fill out. Many darker Hispanics will identify themselves as Black. Some will identify as White-Hispanic, others as simply White. Now instead of answering your question, I have only complicated it even further.
Another thing that was not planned was the anti-immigrant backlash in this country. More deportations have happened in the past 10 years. Obama's administration has deported more than Bush's administration. Also the worldwide economic downturn has suppressed immigration to the United States.
While Davis' prediction may have been wrong, the trend is still moving towards a majority Hispanic population in California and L.A.
