Bederman

 Manliness and Civilization is a sound addition to the discussion of gender, race, and power in American society.   Through her discourse on manliness and civilization Bederman successfully deconstructs the language and tools that white males have used to preserve power in American society.  She does so by highlighting the numerous contradictions in popular thought and actions at the turn of the 20^th century in hopes of debunking the faulty construction of white male power that remains in America at the turn of the 21^st century.
